Reconnect Fremont Walk (Round 2)

On September 26, 2026, ARC hosted the second Reconnect Fremont Walk. You can see the Blog Post from the first walk and our StoryMap for a visual on what Reconnect Fremont is.

Joining us were representatives from the following organizations:

  • Seattle Department of Transportation

  • Washington State Department of Transportation

  • King County Metro

  • Washington State Legislature

  • Woodland Park Zoo

  • King County Council

  • Seattle City Council

  • King County Executive’s Office

Advocacy groups like Ballard Fremont Green Streets, Friends of Lower Woodland Park, and Cascade Bicycle Club also had members join for the walk.

PROGRESS

So what have we accomplished since the first walk? LOTS.

  1. A crossing of Woodland Park Ave / Bridge Way N was funded. This, along with the street level crossing of N 41st or N Motor Pl that we’re advocating for, is the key to building an all-ages-and-abilities bike connection between Fremont and Green Lake.

  2. King County CM Baron and King County Metro GM Michelle Allison committed to building an E-Line stop at Aurora / N 38th to provide E-Line access to Lower Fremont, so long as city / state partners can get a safe crossing installed there. This has been a dream over a decade in the making.

  3. The Woodland Park Zoo has written a letter of support. Cascade Bicycle Club has written a letter of support. Friends of Lower Woodland Park have written a letter of support.

  4. We’ve been in communication with our state representatives to fund Reconnect Fremont. Listen to Sen Pedersen talk about this on Soundside (minute 49).

  5. Reconnect Fremont has been endorsed by Amalgamated Transit Union 587, Ballard Fremont Green Streets, Cascade Bicycle Club, Downtown Emergency Service Center, Fremont Chamber of Commerce, Transit Riders Union Bus and Transit Service committee, and Transportation Choices Coalition.

  6. Reconnect Fremont has been presented in many forums. We presented to the Fremont Neighborhood Council, Seattle School Traffic Safety Committee, Seattle Pedestrian Advisory Board, and Lincoln High School PTSA.

We are going to make ACTION the only possible option on Aurora.

NEXT STEPS

We have a huge opportunity in the next few years for real action with strong support at the city, county, and state level.

For us at the Aurora Reimagined Coalition:

  1. Bring together SDOT, WSDOT, and King County Metro to make the signalized crossing and E-Line stop at Aurora and N 38th a reality.

  2. Continue to build the broad base of support for Reconnect Fremont. Make action the only option.

For King County Metro / Council / Executive’s Office : Identify the blockers to an E-line stop near the Zoo. We’ve heard that funding is a constraint. Are there others?

For SDOT / WSDOT : Identify the blockers to building five traffic-light controlled, street level crossings through the Fremont section of Aurora. We’ve heard that funding is a constraint. Are there others?

For WA Legislators : Allocate funding to Reconnect Fremont in the 2027 legislative session. This should clear the main blocker identified so far.

For the Mayor’s Office / Seattle City Council : Make action a priority on Aurora. Use your voice and influence with partner agencies and your oversight of relevant departments to ensure roadblocks are cleared and action is taken.
